FIELD GUIDE
The story
In Montana's Jocko Valley, a figure of Yum Chenmo, the Great Mother, sits at the hub of a thousand Buddha statues laid out as an eight-spoked wheel.
Ewam International, the Buddhist organisation that runs the garden, describes it as a public park, botanical garden and Buddhist centre in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, just north of Arlee on the land of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. The Flathead Beacon reported in 2024 that the garden was founded shortly after the turn of the century by Gochen Tulku Sang-ngag Tenzin Rinpoche, who also founded Ewam International in 1999, and covers 60 acres.
