TERMS
Terms of Use
The short version: use the road in front of you, contribute only what is yours to give, and if you choose Premium, know exactly what renews and how to cancel.
In effect from 30 September 2026.
What this is
Project Big Things is a field guide to large roadside attractions, and a private way to record the ones you have seen. It is operated by Project Big Things Pty Ltd, an Australian company, and is not affiliated with the towns, councils, businesses or attractions it lists.
By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not, please do not use it.
Getting there safely is your responsibility
We research where a Big Thing stands and, separately, where you can reasonably arrive, because those are often not the same place. We do this carefully and we say when we are unsure.
It is still information, not instruction. Conditions change, things are removed, roads close, and access that was fine last year may be private property today.
- –Always follow the road rules, signage and conditions in front of you, whatever this site says.
- –Do not stop where it is unsafe or unlawful to stop, and do not enter private property without permission.
- –Listings marked as historical, uncertain or restricted are exactly that. Treat them with more caution, not less.
- –If you find something wrong or unsafe, please report it. Corrections from people who were actually there are the most valuable thing we receive.
Your account
You are responsible for keeping your password to yourself and for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think someone else has access to it.
You can delete your account yourself at any time from your account page.
Premium membership and billing
Premium is an optional paid annual membership. Before you confirm a purchase, we show the amount you will be charged now, any introductory offer that applies to you, and the price that will apply when the membership renews. Those purchase details form part of these terms.
Unless you cancel before the renewal date, Premium renews automatically for another year and the payment method on file is charged the renewal price shown to you. If we change that renewal price, we will tell you clearly before it takes effect so you can decide whether to continue.
For a web subscription, use Manage membership in Project Big Things to open the customer portal, where you can view invoices, update your payment method, cancel or re-subscribe. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not cut short the period you have already paid for. If app-store subscriptions are offered later, those subscriptions are managed through the relevant store.
Web membership billing is provided through RevenueCat Billing, using Stripe as the payment gateway. Project Big Things does not receive your full card number.
If we refund the payment for your current subscription period, Premium access may end when that refund is processed. We provide refunds and other remedies whenever the law requires them, and may also provide them in other circumstances. Nothing in this section limits any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law, the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act or the New Zealand Fair Trading Act.
What you contribute
Visitor Log entries, contributed photographs, corrections and reports are contributions. You keep ownership of everything you contribute – we do not take your copyright, and none of this transfers it to us.
By contributing, you give Project Big Things a non-exclusive licence to publish and reuse it: on the Visitor Log entry itself, and to keep it as part of the record of how a listing came to say what it says.
For a photograph you post with a Visitor Log entry, that licence also covers using the same photo, at an editor’s discretion, as the associated Big Thing’s listing photograph and on the discovery surfaces (search results, nearby and similar cards) that show it – and reasonable resizing, cropping or format conversion needed to display it well in those places. This wider reuse is an editorial decision made photo by photo, never automatic just because a photo exists in your Visitor Log. Where the product credits a photographer, your credit is preserved wherever the photo appears. This licence applies from the date stated on this page; a photo posted before that date was posted under the earlier, narrower terms and is not reused this way.
What you must be able to say about a contribution
Before you contribute, you need to be able to honestly confirm all of the following.
- –It is yours to give: you wrote it, or you took the photograph, or you otherwise hold the rights to it.
- –Anyone identifiable in a photograph is comfortable being shown publicly. Take particular care with photographs of children and of other people’s homes.
- –It is about the Big Thing, and it is true as far as you know.
- –It does not contain someone else’s personal information, contact details or private property details.
Content rules for the Visitor Log
The Visitor Log is for a short firsthand note about a place you actually went. It is not a review platform, a comment section or a message board, and it has no replies, likes or followers by design.
We remove entries that break these rules, and we may suspend accounts that repeatedly do.
- –Write about the Big Thing and your visit to it, not about other users.
- –No abuse, harassment, hate, threats or sexual content.
- –No advertising, promotion, spam or repeated posting.
- –No naming or identifying private individuals, and no contact details.
- –No claims you know to be untrue, and nothing that would send someone somewhere unsafe or unlawful.
- –No content you do not have the rights to post.
Moderation and removal
Contributions are reviewed, but not all the same way. A photograph you contribute to the catalogue through Contribute a Photo is held for review before it appears publicly. A Visitor Log entry – text, or a photo you publish yourself with it – appears immediately and is moderated afterwards; anyone can report one.
We may hide, edit the visibility of, or remove any contribution, and we will act quickly on anything that raises a privacy, copyright or safety concern. Where we can, we will tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, reply and say so – we would rather reconsider than be quietly wrong.
Community contributions can support or trigger a correction to a listing, but they never directly rewrite the catalogue. A published fact changes through review, with a record of why.
Reporting and blocking other contributors
If something someone else contributed is the problem, report it directly from the entry, Wall Plate or Explorer Card where you see it. If a contributor’s behaviour, not one specific thing, is the problem, you can report the contributor instead – we will never tell them who reported them.
You can also block a contributor. Blocking hides their Visitor Log entries, Explorer Wall Plates and public Explorer Card from your own signed-in experience. It does not notify them, does not remove their content for anyone else, and is not a moderation action – reporting is how you tell us something needs review; blocking is only about what you personally see.
Our content, and other people’s
The catalogue text, design and artwork are ours. Please do not copy the catalogue wholesale or scrape it.
Photographs and source material from elsewhere are used under their own licences and are credited on the listing where required. Where an image is an illustration rather than a photograph, it is labelled as one, and it is never offered as evidence of what is there.
Map providers and underlying data sources are credited on the map itself. On the website, the Standard map uses Stadia Maps/OpenStreetMap data and Satellite uses Google Maps content. In the native app, Android uses the Google Maps SDK and iPhone/iPad uses Apple MapKit.
If you believe something here infringes your copyright, email hello@projectbigthings.com with enough detail to identify it and we will deal with it promptly.
Google Maps features
Google Maps features and content are used by Satellite view on the website and by the native Android map, including its Standard and satellite/hybrid presentations. When you use those Google Maps features and content, your use is also subject to Google’s then-current Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.
Advertising
Standard membership may include advertising. Premium is ad-free. Any advertising is kept clearly separate from factual, editorial and community content, and it never influences what a listing says or whether a Big Thing appears.
What we do not promise
We work hard to be accurate and to say when we are not sure, but we cannot promise the catalogue is complete, current or error-free, or that the site is always available.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any right you have under the Australian Consumer Law, the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act or the New Zealand Fair Trading Act that cannot lawfully be excluded. Beyond that, the site is provided as it is, and to the extent the law allows we are not liable for loss arising from relying on it.
Changes and contact
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will say so on the site rather than quietly replacing the page.
