FIELD GUIDE
The story
Perseverance and Passage was unveiled in August 2015 in Silver Park, a 15-acre public park on the site of a former lumber mill in Missoula, Montana. It is the work of Missoula metal sculptor George Ybarra and, according to NBC Montana, honours Missoula's resilience and the workers who laboured at the mill site. NBC Montana gave its height as 28 feet and its material as Corten steel.
According to the Missoula Current in 2017, Ybarra envisioned the sculpture 20 years before he began welding it in 2015, and the paper called it the tallest piece of public art in the city. NBC Montana reported a cost of about $45,000, funded by the city's Percent for Art programme, the Morris and Helen Silver Foundation and the Missoula Redevelopment Agency. In October 2017 the agency approved up to $25,000 for up-lighting, as the piece all but vanished after dark; the agency's Chris Behan said people used the base as a place to read and sit.
