FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant weightlifter beside Interstate 83 marks the home of York Barbell, once the centre of American weightlifting.
The figure is a steel-framed, fibreglass statue. The York Daily Record's York Town Square blog in 2009 gave its height as 13 feet and its weight as 1,000 pounds, and said it has signalled the York Barbell building since the 1960s. It is modelled on Norbert Schemansky, who ABC27 describes as a weightlifter who won four Olympic medals. Local21 in 2025 called it a landmark for many in the area, visible to drivers on I-83 heading into York County.
