FIELD GUIDE
The story
A five-storey house in the shape of a work boot is hard to miss on the old Lincoln Highway, which is exactly what its builder intended. The Haines Shoe House stands in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Mahlon N. Haines, a self-made millionaire known as the "Shoe Wizard", built it to advertise his shoe business. The York Daily Record gave the year as 1948 and named York architect Frederick Rempp as its designer. The house's website also gives 1948, though a construction photo is captioned "Circa 1949", and a 2023 WITF report gave 1949.
According to the house's website, Haines asked the architect to "Build me a house like this", and the rooms follow the boot: living room in the toe, kitchen in the heel, two bedrooms in the ankle and a rec room in the instep. WITF reported that it was built on a hill above the original Lincoln Highway, before Route 30 existed, so passing drivers would see it, and that to the current owners' knowledge Haines never lived in it. The website says he offered stays to newlyweds and senior couples. Fire escapes were added in the 1960s, and a stained glass panel reads "Haines the Shoe Wizard."
