FIELD GUIDE
The story
Yard Dog is a 12-foot-tall dog sculpture of steel and recycled corrugated tin by Don Kennell. Visit Greater Palm Springs says it made its debut at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2013, where a custom porch swing under its belly gave people at the campgrounds a place to rest. In an article published in April 2026, the tourism bureau says the swing is no longer part of the piece and that the sculpture now stands at the corner of Avenue 48 and Hjorth Street at Hjorth Park in Indio, which it describes as a dog-friendly park. It is one of several festival artworks the bureau says were relocated to public parks after the festival. The City of Indio lists Hjorth Park at 81253 Avenue 48, with barbecue areas, a playground and tables.
