The story

The 134-foot thermometer at Baker, California, stands along Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Southern California. Casino.org says it was built to honour Death Valley's record heat and dates its first construction to 1990; Fox5 Las Vegas says it was first completed in October 1991, and that strong winds knocked it down the following month. Casino.org adds that the winds, reportedly around 70 mph, snapped it in half and damaged the gift shop below, and that YESCO rebuilt it. It lit up on 9 October 1992. By 2012 it had been switched off to save on the electric bill, Casino.org says, and Barbara Herron later switched it back on, running on LEDs.
In May 2026 both outlets reported the landmark was up for sale. Casino.org identifies the owners as the Herron family and says no asking price was disclosed.
