FIELD GUIDE
The story
Muleshoe, Texas, has a mule shoe 22 feet high at the entrance to its Heritage Center, which the city bills as the "World's Largest Muleshoe."
According to the Muleshoe Heritage Foundation, it was an Eagle Scout project for a Muleshoe High School student, requested by a past president of the foundation and dedicated in 1994. The shoe is 17 feet wide at its widest point and weighs some 15,000 pounds, so it was built in two parts and welded together upright. A local-history blog written in 2012 describes it as made of I-beam steel and big enough to drive a semi through, and says it first stood beside the depot parking lot before being moved in 2008 to its present place beside the highway. The scout paid for it by selling sets of mule shoes, which are embedded in two concrete shoes engraved with the donors' names.
