FIELD GUIDE
The story
Radio station KVMC signed on in Colorado City in 1950 and is known as “the Voice of Mitchell County,” and a giant silver microphone stands in front of it. Roadside America describes a 15-foot replica of a 1940s RCA studio microphone, made from old picket-fence wood painted silver, and says the real microphone was used by the station. Authentic Texas, in an article published in 2023 and updated in 2025, calls the 15-foot replica a roadside attraction. Roadarch says it is believed to have been built in the 1960s and was restored and repainted around 2016. A visitor in 2016 found it falling apart and warned of cactus around it. Roadside America places it on the south side of the business route west of town, near the station’s tall broadcast tower. Treat it as a quick roadside photo stop beside the KVMC station.
