A 30-foot replica of a chair design by 19th-century American cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe stands in Thomasville, North Carolina -- known as 'Chair City' for its furniture-industry heritage. First built of wood by the Thomasville Chair Company in 1922 (using umber and Swiss steer materials), the original chair was taken down in 1936 after deteriorating. It was rebuilt in concrete and steel on a granite pedestal in 1951, and future US President Lyndon Johnson sat in it while campaigning for Vice President in 1960.
