The story

High Point calls itself the Furniture Capital of the World, and on North Hamilton Street it has an office building dressed as a chest of drawers. WFMY News 2 described it in April 2026 as a 38-foot-tall roadside landmark; the North Carolina DocSouth project gives 40 feet for the current chest, with six-foot socks hanging from the middle drawer as symbols of the city's hosiery industry.
According to DocSouth, the chest was first built in 1926, sponsored by the High Point Chamber of Commerce. The original measured 32 feet tall, 14 feet deep and 27 feet wide. It carried the nickname “Bureau of Information.” In 1996 it was remodelled at a cost of $100,000 into the Queen Anne-style chest of today, a design DocSouth credits to Sid Lenger. DocSouth lists the materials as plastic over a steel frame.
