FIELD GUIDE
The story
A skillet more than 18 feet long, handle to handle, is the headline object at the Lodge Museum of Cast Iron, where Tennessee Home and Farm described visitors posing for selfies in front of it. Lodge, the cast iron cookware maker, calls it the world's largest cast iron skillet. The company gives its size as over 18 feet from handle to handle, and its weight as 14,360 pounds.
Lodge has manufactured cast iron cookware in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, since 1896. Fox News credited Lodge with creating the skillet; CBC reported Lodge partnered with an Alabama company to construct it. It drew attention in January 2022, when it travelled north on Interstate 59 on a flatbed truck on its way to the Lodge campus. CBC Radio reported at the time that the skillet is 5.48 metres long from handle to handle, 3.65 metres across and about 6,500 kilograms. Lodge brand development manager Walker Henley told the programme it is technically fully functional. Lodge estimates it is big enough to fry about 650 eggs at once.
