FIELD GUIDE
The story
Three painted words carried a mountaintop garden onto barn roofs across half the country. Rock City sits on the bluff of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, about six miles from downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee; its 2026 profile describes woodland paths through 14 acres between rock formations and over bridges to a viewpoint it calls the Seven States View. A diary entry by missionary Daniel Butrick in 1823, quoted on Rock City’s history page, described “a citadel of rocks” on the mountain.
Garnet Carter began a Lookout Mountain residential development called Fairyland in 1924. Rock City’s history says his wife Frieda marked a trail through the rocks, transplanted wildflowers and placed imported German statues of gnomes and fairy-tale characters, and that the Carters opened the garden to the public on 21 May 1932.
