FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Bat leans against the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, towering over the museum and downtown Louisville at 120 feet tall and 68,000 pounds, according to WAVE. The museum says it is made of steel and is an exact-scale replica of Babe Ruth's 34-inch Louisville Slugger bat. WAVE reported in October 2025 that it was made from a single piece of steel and hand-painted to mimic wood grain, and that it was created in Louisville by Caldwell Tanks, a company known for building massive water towers. The same report says the Big Bat was installed on 21 October 1995, and that the museum marked its 30th birthday with free cupcakes and a giant birthday card for guests to sign. The museum's website states that the Big Bat is the world's largest baseball bat, and The Christian Science Monitor, in a September 2025 feature on the factory, repeated that description. It is the museum's own claim, repeated in the press.
