A life-size bronze woolly mammoth sculpture by artist Douglas Van Howd stands in front of the Main Lodge at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, California, at roughly 8,000 feet elevation. The sculpture was gifted to Dave McCoy, the ski area's founder, for his 75th birthday and has since served as the resort's mascot and symbol. Because it depicts a real extinct megafauna species at true-to-life scale, the sculpture is giant by definition, standing roughly as tall as an actual adult woolly mammoth (approximately 9-11 feet at the shoulder).
