A giant statue depicting the Woodbooger -- Southwest Virginia's local Bigfoot-like cryptid, first named in local lore reported as early as 1892 -- stands along the gravel footpath to the Flag Rock Overlook in Flag Rock Recreation Area, Norton, Virginia, erected by the city in 2015. Interest in the legend grew after Animal Planet's 'Finding Bigfoot' filmed in the area in 2011, leading the City of Norton to pass a 2014 resolution declaring itself a Bigfoot/Woodbooger sanctuary; the city has since embraced the figure with an annual Woodbooger Festival and related local businesses.
