FIELD GUIDE
The story
Drivers on the U.S. 17 Bypass can see WonderWorks, because the building appears to have been ripped out of the ground and dropped on its roof. Discover South Carolina, the state's tourism site, says the roof "juts into the ground" at Broadway at the Beach, and that even the palm trees look as if they are hanging the wrong way.
The attraction's own story is a joke told with a straight face. According to the WonderWorks website, the building began as a top-secret research laboratory on a remote island in the Bermuda Triangle until an experiment released the power of a tornado. The vortex ripped the laboratory from its foundation, carried it thousands of miles and landed it upside down.
