FIELD GUIDE

The story

A blueberry 26 feet tall has stood beside Route 1 in Columbia Falls for more than 25 years, advertising and explaining the crop that Washington County is known for.
According to Maine Preservation, a blueberry-farming couple built the dome after a hotel and restaurant just up Route 1 closed. Inspired by the popularity of geodesic domes, which it links to the architect and summer resident R. Buckminster Fuller, they enlisted a Canadian engineer and an army of friends. They fabricated the timber and steel frame at their farm, numbering the pieces, and raised it over a season. The foam exterior and silicone sealing were done by others. The result measures 50 feet across, according to Maine Preservation. The Bangor Daily News dates the building to 1999; the Sun Journal and Boston.com say it was completed or opened in 2001.
