FIELD GUIDE

The story

Fifteen teepee-shaped rooms line Holbrook's stretch of Route 66, and people still sleep in them. The Wigwam Motel is one of only three survivors of a roadside idea that began in Kentucky.
The National Park Service says Frank Redford opened a teepee-style service station in Horse Cave, Kentucky, in 1933, then built a larger Wigwam Village in Cave City, patented his design by 1937 and sold plans to a handful of other entrepreneurs. Of the seven villages built, only three remain: Cave City, Holbrook (Village No. 6) and Rialto/San Bernardino, California. The Park Service adds that Redford preferred the word wigwam to teepee, and calls the misnomer indicative of the stereotyping of American Indian tribal culture at the time.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Visitors stay overnight in one of the 15 wigwam rooms; a 2026 report said they have no flat-screen televisions or Bluetooth technology. Vintage cars are displayed on the property. It is a working family motel rather than a museum.
ACCESS
811 W. Hopi Drive, Holbrook, Arizona, along Historic Route 66. A private working motel: the wigwams are guest rooms, so going inside one means booking a stay.
