FIELD GUIDE
The story
Garrison, North Dakota, bills itself as the Walleye Capital of the World, and Wally is the evidence: a 26-foot fiberglass fish rising above a sign in City Park at the north end of Main Street. North Dakota Tourism says the statue represents the walleye fishery of nearby Lake Sakakawea.
According to the Talking Trail audio tour, the park sits on the site of the town's second school, built in 1907 and followed by a third in 1916, which burned in 1955. Talking Trail says Wally arrived in 1980, when Garrison celebrated its 75th anniversary and was promoting itself through events such as the Governor's Walleye Cup fishing tournament. The Civic Club, Sportsman's Club and Governor's Walleye Cup Committee together designed and produced the fish.
