This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A surplus 30,000-pound anchor from the aircraft carrier USS Antietam (CV-36) -- measuring 146 inches along the shank and 116 inches across the flukes -- sits on a paved walkway leading into Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Donated by the U.S. Navy's Naval Historical Center and dedicated to the citizens of Norfolk on October 16, 1983, the anchor commemorates the Antietam, commissioned in 1945, which served in the Pacific and earned two battle stars during the Korean War before being decommissioned in 1963.
