Ultimate Challenge is a 12-foot-tall cast bronze and rock sculpture of a nude male surfer riding a wave, created by sculptor Edmond E. Shumpert in 1976. Locally nicknamed "Nude Dude" and "Naked Surfer," it was originally installed at a City Hall location in 1973 before being moved in 1976 to its current, high-profile spot at the entrance to Huntington Beach's downtown, at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street. The nudity of the figure was a deliberate classical-sculpture choice by the artist and has made the piece a locally controversial but enduring landmark since the clothing-optional 1970s.
