FIELD GUIDE

The story

Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian swimmer and surfer, is honoured by a bronze statue in Huntington Beach. A large bronze statue of him stands at the end of Main Street at Pacific Coast Highway, close to the pier.
According to the Huntington Beach Public Library, the life-size bronze was commissioned and created by Edmond Shumpert in 2001. A Visit Huntington Beach art-tour listing names the artist as Edmund Schumpert and gives the year as unknown, estimated in the 1990s, so the date is not settled. The Epoch Times reported in 2023 that the city council in 2002 approved extending the Surfers' Hall of Fame imprints onto nearby sidewalks encircling the statue. The library describes it as a very popular photo spot surrounded by Hall of Fame tributes.
