FIELD GUIDE
The story
Sumter's Tire Man has been rebuilt. According to The Sumter Item in August 2024, an original Tire Man welcomed motorists for years in front of Myson's Tires at Broad Street and Carter Road. The newspaper quoted Roadside America's description of it as a "15-foot-tall dude made of stacked tires with upraised arms and a chrome wheel rim for a face", and reported that it had disappeared from that location.
The replacement, which the shop's co-owner calls Tire Man V2.0, was reported standing outside the shop's current store at 3890 Broad Street in August 2024. The Item said it took well over a year to rebuild and that the co-owner did not want to use leftover tires. Where the first figure had both arms extended, the new one raises its right arm in a salute. It faces, across the street, the full-scale Tuskegee Airmen P-51 Mustang Red Tail at Sumter Veterans Park, which the Item described as a monument to the African American airmen and support staff of the Second World War.
