FIELD GUIDE
The story
At the Oceanfront end of Laskin Road, the Laskin Gateway has a sculpture in the middle of a roundabout. The Wave, by Indianapolis artist Jeff Laramore, is a 35-foot piece of stainless steel plates and cables. The Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation chose it after a national search, with art professionals from Virginia MOCA and the Chrysler Museum of Art, and dates it to 2013. The foundation says the angles of the supporting members and cables evoke movement as you approach and pass, and that the open design lets high winds pass through. LED programmed lighting colours it in the evening. It stands in a reflecting pool; the foundation gives the pool as 35 feet wide, while the fabricator, Smock Fansler, describes a 40-foot-diameter basin with an infinity edge and a sculpture 35 feet tall and 30 feet wide. The roundabout itself opened in May 2013, WTKR reported, as the last major part of the Laskin Road Gateway project. Visit Virginia Beach includes the work in its 2025 guide to the resort's must-see art.
