FIELD GUIDE
The story
King Neptune is a 34-foot bronze sea god at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, and the city's public art page says it was paid for entirely by private donations.
That page describes a cast bronze Neptune by Virginia sculptor Paul DiPasquale, standing at 31st Street and the Boardwalk, overlooking Neptune Park. Neptune holds his trident and is surrounded by creatures of his realm, with his gaze resting on the shore. The page says the statue honors the city's maritime heritage and reminds residents to protect natural resources. DiPasquale also made the bronze statue of Arthur Ashe on Richmond's Monument Avenue.
