FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 13-foot fiberglass snowman serves shaved ice from its belly beside a Pennsylvania country road, and it has been doing so since 2013.
The stand is at 238 E. Portersville Road (Route 488) in Portersville, Butler County, just off Interstate 79 and near Moraine State Park. Pittsburgh Magazine reported in 2024 that the owners, looking for a roadside business, learned that a Twistee Treat ice-cream-cone-shaped structure was for sale in Cincinnati. In a warehouse of novelty architecture they spotted the snowman instead, weatherbeaten, in a navy blue hat and black mittens holding a hunter green snow cone. The magazine traced its path since the early 1980s from New Mexico to Texas to Mississippi to Ohio. KDKA-TV, also in 2024, reported that the snowman came on a trailer and that its colour scheme had to be redone.
