FIELD GUIDE

The story

Wellington Airport lost its eagles in May 2025. Three months later it unveiled a fifteen-metre illuminated bird spirit in their place.
Te Manu Muramura was revealed on 8 August 2025, made by Wētā Workshop in fibreglass, steel and polycarbonate, and it interprets a local pūrākau – the story of Whātaitai, one of the taniwha whose movement shaped Wellington harbour. The airport's own framing is that it wanted a showpiece telling a uniquely Wellington and New Zealand story rather than a licensed film property.
