FIELD GUIDE
The story
When the eagles came down in May 2025, Smaug stayed.
Wellington Airport was explicit about it at the time: the giant Wētā Workshop dragon remained in the check-in area even as the two fifteen-metre eagles and Gandalf ended their twelve-year residence in the terminal. That makes Smaug the last survivor of the airport's Middle-earth period, which ran from the Hobbit films through to the arrival of Te Manu Muramura, the illuminated bird spirit unveiled in August 2025.

WHAT TO EXPECT
When Wellington Airport removed its giant eagles in May 2025, the airport explicitly confirmed that Smaug the Magnificent remained in the check-in area.
ACCESS
