This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 90-foot fiberglass alligator sculpture forms the walk-through entrance to Surf City Waves, a beachwear outlet on NC-50 in Surf City, North Carolina. Built by sculptor Bob Duato -- who moved to the Carolinas coast from Cape Cod in 1989 and built numerous large fiberglass shark, alligator, and other creature sculptures for beachwear retailers across the Carolinas, Florida, and Texas -- the alligator is one of Duato's largest works and required him to engineer its structure to meet local building and wind-load codes. Customers enter the store through the alligator's open mouth.
