FIELD GUIDE

The story

According to the National Register nomination, this gold-flecked concrete parabola was finished in 1964, three years before St. Louis's Gateway Arch, over an industrial park entrance in north Miami-Dade. The Sunshine State Arch spans the entrance to the Sunshine State Industrial Park at NW 13th Avenue and NW 167th Street in Miami Gardens, beside the Palmetto Expressway just west of the Golden Glades Interchange.
The Miami Herald put its height at 110 feet in 2024, though a caption on a 1960s archive photograph in the same feature says 120. According to the National Register nomination, it was designed by Walter C. Harry Associates, constructed by Webb Construction Company and lifted into position by Poston Bridge and Iron Company. Construction began on July 16, 1964, took three months and cost $100,000, with the pieces assembled in three days using seven 120-foot boom cranes. A Herald caption says five cranes hoisted one 100-ton leg. Its surface was covered with marble chips and gold aluminum flecking to look like gold.
