This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 30-foot, one-fifth-scale bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty was commissioned by Liberty National Life Insurance Company president Frank Samford Sr. in the 1950s and installed atop the company's downtown Birmingham headquarters in 1958. It was relocated in the late 1980s (dedicated July 4, 1989) to Liberty Park, a commercial development near I-459 adjacent to the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America headquarters, where real gas-fired flames burn continuously from its torch, making it one of the largest Liberty replicas in the world.
