Miss Fancy elephant bronze statue (Avondale Park, 2022)

Miss Fancy was the elephant that made Avondale Park famous. According to Friends of Avondale Park, the park housed Birmingham's first zoo from 1913 to 1934, and its star attraction was a former circus elephant who occasionally wandered into the surrounding neighbourhoods. WBRC reported in December 2022 that she was known as Birmingham's first elephant, that she roamed Avondale, Woodlawn and Forest Park, played with children at Avondale Elementary School and sometimes pressed her face against the windows of local homes. The bronze statue unveiled at Avondale Park in December 2022 was created by artist Nelson Grice. It replaced an earlier statue, installed in 2013 according to WBRC, which was damaged by a drunk driver; a campaign was launched to get a new one. In its 2024 year-end update, Friends of Avondale Park described Miss Fancy at the park's main entrance and a second figure, Little Miss Fancy, on the park's west side, which volunteers kept dressed up, with Little Miss Fancy surrounded by plants.
