The story

A new landmark at Huntsville's John Hunt Park moves with the wind by day and glows in programmed colours by night. SkyLume is a 60-foot illuminated sculpture at the roundabout entrance to Joe Davis Stadium, unveiled on 13 May 2026 at a Huntsville City Football Club match, according to the City of Huntsville. It is made of painted steel and aluminium, with kinetic elements and programmable lighting. The designer is Adam Buente of Project One Studio in Indianapolis, chosen in November 2024 through a competitive invitational process, run by the Huntsville Public Art Committee, that drew nearly 100 international artist candidates. 256 Today described it as the largest public-art commission Arts Huntsville has managed for the city so far, and reported that its programmable pixel lights turn it into a multicoloured display after dark. Buente said the sculpture explores themes of gravitational pull, community connection and forward momentum, and that its central ribbon symbolises an unseen force that draws people in. Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken said it gives the park a defining landmark with a sense of place unique to Huntsville. The city's Parks and Recreation director, James Gossett, linked the choice to the park itself, saying that "twenty Olympic sports are practiced in and around John Hunt Park". He said its shape almost suggests an Olympic torch. 256 Today placed it at the roundabout south of the stadium, near the park's festival grounds, and called it a permanent installation.
