FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Mother Earth Troll Garden at Huntsville Botanical Garden is home to Mama Zelda, a seated troll sculpture by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo. The garden says the area opened to the public on 1 April 2025, and WAFF reported a ribbon-cutting that day for what it called the garden's newest attraction. Visitors make their way through a maze to reach her in a plaza. The garden describes the area as about one acre, between the Garden of Hope and the Fern Glade. It says her head, hands and feet were built in Dambo's workshop in Denmark and shipped to Huntsville, while the body and maze were built by the Dambo team, garden staff and community volunteers using locally salvaged materials. The garden gives her height as 18 to 20 feet and an expected lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Rebecca Turk, the garden's vice president of learning and public engagement, told WAFF: "the beauty and size of her is truly something magical." The garden says climbing on the troll is not allowed.
