Skull Kingdom was a 16,000-square-foot haunted-house attraction built as a castle near International Drive and Universal Boulevard in Orlando. It opened on 13 June 1997 after a construction budget that grew to $2.8 million. Its skeletal facade, with a skull framed by waterfalls and flame cannons on the turrets, made it a landmark on the strip. It closed in November 2006. At an auction in February 2007 the owners of Daytona Lagoon won the building and contents with a $26,000 bid. According to Daytona Lagoon's managing director, Skull Kingdom's owners then tried to void the deal, and a handshake deal at about $32,500 was left in limbo by problems with a lien.
