FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 41-foot knight was reported in 2024 to be guarding a converted school at the end of North Dakota's Enchanted Highway, facing a dragon 100 feet long, according to North Dakota Tourism. Sir Albert and the Dragon is the work of Gary Greff, who began building giant scrap-metal sculptures in 1989 along the 32-mile road from Exit 72 on I-94 to Regent, with the aim of reviving his hometown. The Enchanted Castle, a hotel, steakhouse and tavern in Regent's former school, opened in 2012, and North Dakota Tourism says the idea for the knight and dragon came to Greff after he had opened it. "When you have a castle, you've got to have a dragon," he told the Dickinson Press in 2017, when the paper described the planned sculpture as the first of the attraction to stand in the town itself.
North Dakota Living reported in May 2024 that the knight is clad in armour made of tin and the green dragon measures 42 feet tall and 100 feet from nose to tail, clad in chain-link fence to replicate scales. It put the work at nine years of shaping steel rods into ribs and welding metal into armour, and counted the pair as the eighth sculpture scene on the highway. North Dakota Tourism describes Sir Albert resting his longsword atop his shield.
