FIELD GUIDE
The story
Swan Lake Iris Gardens in Sumter is entered past a 24-foot swan sculpture by Grainger McKoy, set within a fountain. Hood Construction, which worked on the entrance upgrade, calls it the centrepiece of the new entrance; the same project added granite and cobblestone paving, brick pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, decorative brick walls and a new deceleration lane for eastbound traffic on Liberty Street. In October 2020 The Fountain Division, a fountain firm involved in the work, called Seven Swans "the crown on the new entrance fountain" and wrote, "It was a long journey from concept to completion." McKoy has a second work in the park. The City of Sumter says he created Recovery, an eighteen-foot stainless steel sculpture of a pintail duck's wing, unveiled on 1 May 2010 in a disappearing fountain among Japanese iris beds. The gardens began in 1927, according to the city, as a private fishing retreat, and the city lists admission as free. In December 2025 the city announced a North Entrance Renovation, which it said allows for "a great viewing area" for the Seven Swans sculpture.
