FIELD GUIDE
The story
A rocking chair about 42 feet tall once held the Guinness record beside a quiet stretch of old Route 66 in Missouri. It stands at Fanning, a small community on Highway ZZ, four miles west of Cuba, outside a general store. Route 66 News reported in April 2008 that it was set up on 1 April of that year, an early report of a chair about 46 feet tall in black and white, which a later update in the same report revised to 44 feet 2 inches. St. Louis Magazine and Route 66 News both say 42 feet and about 20 feet wide. Route 66 News gave the weight as 27,000 pounds. St. Louis Magazine says Guinness validated the title and that the chair once swayed like a working rocker before it was fixed in place for safety. In 2015 a chair 56 feet 1 inch tall, verified by Guinness in Casey, Illinois, took the record. Route 66 News reported in December 2015 that the Fanning chair had been painted red and renamed the Route 66 Red Rocker. The store closed in August 2016, and Route 66 News reported in July 2017 that a new owner planned to reopen it and that the chair would stay with the property. Missouri's tourism site lists the store as the home of the former world's largest rocking chair and advises checking its website for details, so confirm opening times before a detour.
