FIELD GUIDE
The story
Visit Missouri lists a 35-foot steel statue of an Osage family and a wolf beside the Interstate 44 visitor center in Cuba, Missouri. The Osage Nation said in October 2015 that the Osage Trail Legacy Monument, then under construction, would be about 35 feet tall, 20 feet wide and 80 feet long, and called it the largest monument recognizing Osage people.
Local sculptor Glen Tutterrow conceived it and worked on the all-steel sculpture with his son Curtis. The Osage Nation said the Cuba project team contacted it to verify the historical accuracy of the presentation. A Cuba news site reported that the monument shows an Osage family traveling west on the Osage Trail. Osage News reported in 2017, citing a news release, that the trail began as the route buffalo and other herd animals took each year, followed by the Osage and other tribes, and that its path later served as the template for historic Route 66 and Interstate 44. In 2015 the project's organizers said they were about $75,000 short of a $500,000 budget.
