FIELD GUIDE

The story

A yellow-painted bronze banana on roller skates, “On a Roll” by sculptor Jack Hill, is among the pieces at Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, Colorado. Visit Loveland's family guide (March 2024) points families to the park's children's garden to see it, and a January 2025 guide lists it as installed in 2022. A Loveland High Plains Arts Council page lists “On a Roll” at 7 feet by 48 inches and says Benson Park adopted the 7-foot roller-skating banana into its permanent family. Hill's own biography says his career as a mime, magician and ventriloquist spanned three continents and 22 years before he turned to sculpture, learning the lost-wax casting process at a local foundry, and lists roller-skating bananas among the fruit-shaped figures in his work. The City of Loveland describes the garden as free to walk through, with more than 150 pieces of sculpture, and says the High Plains Arts Council makes the art selections. The annual Sculpture in the Park show and sale is held at the garden; the council schedules the next show for 13 to 15 August 2027.
