This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
Robert Howell, a self-taught Virginia folk artist working in Powhatan County (near Richmond), has created an environment of large-scale animal and human figures, whirligigs, weathervanes, birdhouses, and gazebos on his property since his earliest days as an artmaker. Some of his large-scale whirligigs and weathervanes are so massive that only strong winds can move them, and he built a giant wind-chime sculpture from rusting helium/oxygen tanks reported to be audible for miles. His work, including an early Statue of Liberty piece, is documented by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation and the Folk Art Society of America as significant examples of American outsider/folk art.
