FIELD GUIDE
The story
Richmond’s Markel Building was inspired by a baked potato wrapped in foil, and it has collected nicknames ever since. It stands just off West Broad Street near Willow Lawn, and the architect himself told WTVR in 2017, “It looks like a flying saucer. Or a wedding cake.”
Axios Richmond reported in July 2026 that Markel commissioned the building in 1962 from local architect and Virginia Commonwealth University professor Haigh Jamgochian. WTVR says his big break came in 1960 with a sketch of a bundle of concrete mushrooms wrapped in glass; the Markel family did not understand the drawing, so Jamgochian built a model, and after several redesigns the result was circular and three levels high. It opened in 1965.
