FIELD GUIDE

The story

Look for the pump from Route 30: it is a 21-foot replica of a 1940s Bennett gas pump, and the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor uses it to point drivers to its museum. The corridor's Roadside Giants page says students of the Eastern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center built it with help from Mangery Crane, Modern Woodmen of America and Terra Testing. It is one of five oversized roadside objects made by technical-school students along the Pennsylvania Lincoln Highway, alongside a Packard car, a bicycle built for two, a giant quarter and a 1920 Selden pickup truck.
The pump has not always stood at the museum. The Latrobe Bulletin reported on 17 September 2019 that it had spent about ten years on Route 30 West at Route 259, near Idlewild & SoakZone, before being moved the previous Saturday to a spot beside the Lincoln Highway Experience sign. The paper gave its weight as more than 4,700 pounds and said a Pittsburgh firm donated a crane and hauler and others built a concrete base and wired it for lighting.
