FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Mac has a museum, an unassuming one: a working McDonald's off the Pennsylvania Turnpike with a 14-foot burger inside. The Big Mac Museum Restaurant is at 9061 US 30 in North Huntingdon, about 20 miles from Pittsburgh and just off the Irwin exit, according to the Observer-Reporter in 2026.
The sandwich itself dates from 1967, when Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchisee in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, introduced it; the Associated Press reported that it was on menus nationwide a year later. To mark its 40th anniversary, Delligatti and his family opened the museum in August 2007, according to the AP, which described it as full of memorabilia and celebratory exhibits and home to what McDonald's called the world's largest Big Mac statue. The Observer-Reporter said the museum has corporate blessing, that Delligatti died in 2016 at age 98, and that the restaurant is run by his family.
