FIELD GUIDE
The story
For decades a 90-foot bowling pin towered above the Ritz Classic bowling alley on State Street in South Salt Lake. According to the Salt Lake Tribune in May 2017, the sign was built in 1958, taken apart on April 12, 2017, and renovated before South Salt Lake and the Yesco sign company returned it to its longtime perch on May 9. The Tribune reported that it would mark the entrance to the Ritz Classic Apartments, then under construction.
Think Architecture, which designed the apartments, describes the bowling alley as now shuttered and the reassembled sign as a symbol of the neighbourhood's past and future; it says the five-storey complex has 287 units. The architects write that the pin has served as a place-maker for the area since 1958.
