KSL reported it as 23 ft high, with body and flippers extending 40 ft. FIELD GUIDE

The story

In Salt Lake City's 9th and 9th neighborhood a humpback whale breaches from the middle of a roundabout, and its paint is meant to change.
Out of the Blue is by Utah artist Stephen Kesler, who the city's public art page says spent nearly two decades in the neighborhood. The page says it is made of fiberglass and steel, and carries Kesler's statement describing the neighborhood as a community where people of all backgrounds, beliefs and ideas feel a sense of belonging. KSL reported that the whale stands 23 feet tall with its body and flippers extending 40 feet, at the roundabout at 900 South and 1100 East. KSL also said the Salt Lake City Art Design Board selected the design in May 2021 after inviting artists to apply with designs, and that the roundabout itself began as a 2018 pop-up test at a problem intersection and was made permanent a year later.
