FIELD GUIDE
The story
Covington has no known link to the president it honours. According to The Advocate in 2025, Ronald Reagan never visited the city during his eight years in office, yet a bronze Reagan stands at the town's trailhead, smiling and saluting. It is there because of a friendship, according to The Advocate.
The Advocate reports that oilman and philanthropist Patrick F. Taylor set out to fund a Louisiana memorial after Reagan died in 2004, and that Taylor himself died in November 2004. His family's Patrick F. Taylor Foundation later agreed to pay for the statue. The choice of Covington followed the 2003 naming of a stretch of US 190 as Ronald Reagan Highway, the newspaper says. The plaque, Louisiana Life reported in 2014, says the statue was commissioned and donated by Taylor on 27 June 2008.
