The story
Sergei Rachmaninoff gave his last public performance in Knoxville, in 1943, and a bronze statue in World's Fair Park commemorates it. The University of Tennessee's Daily Beacon reported in 2008 that the 11-foot bronze, titled "Rachmaninoff: The Final Concert", shows the composer with his hand on a keyboard. It names the sculptor Victor Borkarev; the Knoxville History Project spells the name Viktor Bokarov and says he donated the statue to Knoxville. According to the Beacon, the concert took place in 1943 at the university's Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, and Rachmaninoff died of cancer six weeks later. The same article says the statue was previously in a house on Gay Street and had stood by the park's amphitheater since 2001.
The Knoxville History Project places it in the south-western section of the park and calls it the "Western Hemisphere's only statue" of one of the 20th century's great composers. A 2026 WUOT concert listing describes it as the statue in World's Fair Park that commemorates his final piano recital in Knoxville.
