FIELD GUIDE

The story

A bronze Quarter Pounder with Cheese, about eight feet wide on a granite pedestal, stands at a McDonald's off Cheyenne Boulevard by Interstate 90 in Rapid City. Cowboy State Daily reported in 2024 that the finished monument is 9 feet tall and 8 feet wide, counting the pedestal. It was installed in February 2020, according to Cowboy State Daily, for the burger's 50th anniversary, after Rapid City was chosen over North Dakota, Wyoming and Hawaii in a nationwide contest. McDonald's has said the city was chosen as the home of the most Quarter Pounder fans per capita. Tasting Table gives a weight of 23,000 pounds (about 11.5 tons).
Utah artist Raymond Gibby designed the burger, and Bott Monument of Riverton, Wyoming made the granite pedestal. Tasting Table says the work took about 1,800 hours. The base reads "The Quarter Pounder with Cheese" with a Latin line, "calidum et deliciose succosum", which the article translates as "hot and deliciously juicy". Tasting Table called it a popular tourist stop in 2025, and Cowboy State Daily wrote in October 2026 that the burger now sits in Rapid City on the way to Mount Rushmore.
